Overview
Spiti is a high cold desert in northern Himachal, with villages above 4,000 m, Buddhist monasteries and long empty roads. It rewards slow travel and proper acclimatisation. Roads are rough, fuel and ATMs are limited, and weather can close passes. It is not a place to rush.

Safety & permits
Permits & entry
Permits and checkposts
Carry ID + vehicle papersIndian citizens generally do not need a permit for Kinnaur and Spiti. You do have to register at police checkposts (reported at Jangi and Sumdo) with photo ID and the vehicle's registration certificate. This is routine border-area registration, not a permit. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for part of the route. Confirm with the Lahaul-Spiti or Kinnaur district administration before you go.
Safety notes
Altitude sickness is the main risk. Ascend gradually, drink water, avoid alcohol, and descend if symptoms get worse. Carry cash; ATMs may not work. Fuel is limited: fill up whenever you can. Rain and snow can close passes at short notice.
Phone network & ATMs
Network is weak outside Kaza and works only on certain providers; do not count on it.
