Overview
Dalhousie sits at about 2,000 m in Chamba district, spread over a few hillsides with colonial-era churches, short walks and Dhauladhar views on clear days. It suits a relaxed 2–3 day break more than a packed trip. Most people use it as a base for Khajjiar, Kalatop and the Dainkund ridge. Summers are mild and busy. Winters bring cold and some snow, mostly at higher spots, and a few budget hotels close. The roads are steep and narrow, so a small car or hired local taxi is easier than your own large SUV.

How to reach
By train to Pathankot, then road
Shared seat or bus: ₹150–400; private cab from Pathankot: ₹2,500–4,000There is no railway station in Dalhousie. The usual railhead is Pathankot, roughly 80 km away. Sources quote Pathankot Junction and nearby Chakki Bank, so check which station your train uses. Overnight trains from Delhi and Amritsar run to Pathankot. From there, shared taxis, buses and private cabs take about 2.5–3 hours on the NH154A hill road.
By air
Airport taxi: ₹3,000–6,000 depending on airportSources disagree on the nearest airport. Pathankot airport is about 75–85 km away, but its flights change often, so check current schedules. Gaggal (Kangra) is about 130 km away and takes longer by road. Amritsar is a larger alternative, roughly 4.5 hours by road. Allow buffer time for weather delays.
By road from Delhi or Chandigarh
Bus from Delhi/Chandigarh: ₹700–1,800Delhi is roughly 560–570 km away, around 11–12 hours by road, usually via Pathankot. Government and private buses from Delhi, Chandigarh and Pathankot serve the town. If you self-drive, expect narrow, steep local lanes and park outside the busiest stretches. Check current rules for outside-state vehicles on the Himachal transport site.
Where to stay
Budget hotels and guesthouses
₹800–2,000 / nightSimple rooms are clustered around Gandhi Chowk, Subhash Chowk and the Garam Sadak side. In peak summer and long weekends, book ahead. In winter, ask about heating and hot water. A few budget places shut in the coldest months, so confirm they are open.
Mid-range hotels and homestays
₹2,500–6,000 / nightThis is the sweet spot for most families and couples. Look for rooms with a valley or Dhauladhar view, working geysers and parking. Reviews matter more than star ratings here. Ask whether parking is on-site, as some lanes are very steep.
Resorts and heritage-style stays
₹7,000–15,000 / nightHigher-end properties are spread across Dalhousie and towards Khajjiar. They suit longer, quieter stays. If you stay in Khajjiar, remember that you will be farther from town food options. Peak-season and snow-week rates can be much higher.
Things to do
Walk the old town
FreeSpend an evening wandering between Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, stopping at the colonial churches and shops. Subhash Baoli is a quiet short walk from the centre. Wear shoes with grip because slopes are steep, especially when wet.
Khajjiar day trip
Activities ₹100–1,500 eachThe meadow with a small lake lies roughly 20–25 km from town, depending on the source. Go early to beat tour groups. Entry is generally free, but horse rides, zorbing and paragliding are charged separately. Agree rates before you start.
Dainkund Peak walk
Free; taxi for the day ₹2,500–4,500The ridge is the highest point near town at around 2,700 m. Plan a short walk to the Pholani Devi temple and a wind-swept top with wide views. Go in the morning for clearer skies. Check the weather, because cloud and snow can close the view.
Kalatop forest walk
Small entry fee, check on arrivalKalatop Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the Khajjiar road and is good for a quiet forest walk. A per-person and per-vehicle fee has been reported in older sources. Fees and hours change, so check before you go.
Food
Himachali thali and local dishes
₹150–400 per mealLook for simple dhabas and small restaurants serving dal, rajma, madra and rice. Chamba-style dishes such as chukh (a chilli pickle) are worth asking about. Busy local places usually give better value than hotel dining rooms.
Tibetan momos and thukpa
₹80–250Small cafes and stalls near the main chowks serve momos, thukpa and noodles. They are filling, cheap and good on a cold evening. Ask if the broth is vegetarian if that matters to you.
Cafés and hotel restaurants
₹300–800 per personFor a sit-down meal with a view, mid-range hotels and a few cafés serve North Indian, Chinese and continental food. Prices rise in peak season. Carry cash for smaller places, since some do not take cards or UPI reliably.
Safety & permits
Permits & entry
Entry permits
Check official sitesIndian citizens generally do not need a special permit to visit Dalhousie or Khajjiar. Carry a valid photo ID for hotel check-in. Some outside-state vehicles may have to pay a Himachal entry or tax fee at the border. Rules change, so confirm on the official Himachal Pradesh tourism or transport sites before travelling.
Sanctuary and activity fees
Small fees, check locallyKalatop Wildlife Sanctuary may charge entry fees and have fixed hours. Khajjiar activities such as horse rides, zorbing and paragliding charge separate fees. Rules, fees and operator licences change, so ask for the current rate card and check with local forest or tourism offices.
Winter road conditions
Check before you goAfter snowfall, local authorities may restrict vehicles or close some roads, especially towards Khajjiar and Dainkund. Check the latest district advisory and ask your hotel before you set out. Confirm on the official Chamba district or Himachal police channels.
Safety notes
Hill roads are steep and narrow, with sharp turns. Avoid night drives, especially in the rain or after snow. July–August brings landslide risk and road delays, so keep a buffer day. Paragliding, zorbing and horse rides are run by local operators, so check their safety gear and agree prices first. Carry warm layers even in summer evenings. Winter roads can be slippery, so carry chains or hire a local driver used to the conditions.
Phone network & ATMs
Mobile signal is usually fine in Dalhousie town, but patchy on forest stretches, Khajjiar's edges and Dainkund. Data speeds vary by operator. Download offline maps and keep some cash, as ATMs and UPI can be unreliable in smaller places. Hotel Wi-Fi can be slow, so do not plan important video calls without a backup.
