🛂 Your travel passport

The old summer capital: ridge-top walks, colonial buildings and easy access from Chandigarh.

Overview

Shimla was the British summer capital and still has the pine-covered ridges, Victorian buildings and busy Mall Road to show for it. It is crowded in May–June and at New Year, but quiet and clear in autumn. Good for a first hill trip, a long weekend, or as the gateway to Kinnaur and Spiti.

How to reach

  • By road from Chandigarh

    ~4 h

The most common route: about 115 km, usually 3.5 to 5 hours depending on traffic at Parwanoo and Solan.

  • By train

    Kalka → Shimla

The narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla line is slow (about 5 hours) but scenic. Reach Kalka from Delhi/Chandigarh by train first.

  • By air

    Check current flights

Shimla's airport is small with limited flights; most travellers fly to Chandigarh and drive.

Where to stay

  • Near Mall Road and the Ridge

    ₹1,500–6,000 / night

Walkable to everything, but traffic-free zones mean a short uphill carry with luggage. Best for first-timers.

  • Mashobra, Naldehra, Chail side

    ₹2,500–9,000 / night

Quieter, greener and away from the crowds; you will need a cab for most things.

Things to do

  • Walk Mall Road and the Ridge

    1–2 h

Free, crowded in season, lovely at dusk. Christ Church and the Ridge viewpoint are close together.

  • Kufri and Fagu day trip

    Half day

Short drive for views and (in winter) snow. Expect crowds at the touristy spots; the quieter walks beyond are better.

  • Jakhu temple walk

    1–2 h

A steady climb to a hilltop temple. Keep food in a bag; monkeys are bold.

  • Toy train ride

    Book ahead in season

Take a short section of the Kalka–Shimla line rather than the whole route if time is tight.

Food

  • Himachali dhaam and siddu

    ₹150–400 / person

Look for local thalis and steamed bread (siddu) at small restaurants away from the Mall.

  • Café culture on the Mall

    ₹100–500 / person

Plenty of bakeries and cafés; good for breakfast and tea.

Safety notes

Roads are steep and sometimes slow after rain or snow; avoid driving at night if unfamiliar. Watch your belongings around monkeys. In winter, ask your hotel about road conditions before arriving.

Phone network & ATMs

Good mobile coverage in town on major networks; patchy on forest roads.
