Overview

Manali sits in the Kullu valley on the Beas river. It is a base for snow in winter and for trips over the mountains to Lahaul, Spiti and Ladakh in summer. Old Manali is the calmer, café-lined side; the town and Mall are busier. Peak season is packed, so go outside school holidays if you can.

How to reach

  • By road from Delhi

    12–15 h

About 540 km. Overnight Volvo/deluxe buses are the standard way; allow 12–15 hours depending on the highway.

  • By road from Chandigarh

    8–9 h

About 310 km via Mandi and Kullu, around 8–9 hours.

  • Nearest air/rail

    Plan a road leg

Bhuntar (Kullu) airport has limited flights; the closest main railheads are Chandigarh and Joginder Nagar.

Where to stay

  • Old Manali

    ₹600–5,000 / night

Cafés, homestays and hostels along the river; a short cab or walk from the Mall.

  • Mall Road side

    ₹1,500–8,000 / night

Hotels and easy buses; more traffic and noise.

  • Naggar, Kullu side

    ₹1,500–6,000 / night

Quieter and more heritage-feel, 20 km down the valley.

Things to do

  • Hadimba Temple and Vashisht

    3–4 h

Easy half-day: forest temple and a hot-spring village. Go early to avoid queues.

  • Solang Valley

    Half day

Snow activities in winter; paragliding and ropeway in other seasons. Weather decides everything here.

  • Atal Tunnel and Sissu

    Full day

The tunnel shortens the drive to Lahaul; Sissu is a quiet stop with views.

  • Jogini Falls walk

    2–3 h

Moderate walk from Vashisht with a waterfall at the end.

Food

  • Trout and Himachali dishes

    ₹200–600 / person

River trout is a local speciality; try sidu and local thalis too.

  • Old Manali cafés

    ₹200–600 / person

Relaxed cafés with river views and international menus.

Safety & permits

Permits & entry

  • Rohtang Pass

    Check before travel

Going up to Rohtang Pass has needed a paid, per-vehicle permit booked online (reported fee about ₹550, with a daily quota of vehicles and the road shut on some days such as Tuesdays or for snow clearance). The pass is open roughly mid-May to late November, weather permitting. Rules and the point tourists may drive to change by district order, so confirm on the Himachal Tourism / Kullu administration pages before you plan. Using the Atal Tunnel to reach Lahaul does not need a Rohtang permit.

Safety notes

Landslides and road closures are common in the monsoon (July–August). Winter snow can close roads at short notice. Book adventure sports with operators who show valid certification; skip any that skip safety gear.

Phone network & ATMs

Good in town; poor beyond Sissu and on the Lahaul side.
