Overview

Kovalam is a beach town south of Thiruvananthapuram with three adjoining bays: Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach. The lighthouse bay is the busiest, with a lifeguard-patrolled swimming zone, seafood shacks and guesthouses. The others are quieter and rockier. It suits 2-3 day trips and can be paired with Trivandrum city or Poovar. October to March is the comfortable season. Swimming is restricted during the June-August monsoon. A court-ordered halt on construction at nearby Pulinkudi beach was reported in October 2026, so check local news before you go.

How to reach

  • By air

    Taxi/app cab: ₹400–800

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) is the nearest airport. It is roughly 15 km from Kovalam, though sources give figures from about 10 to 17 km. Pre-paid taxis and app cabs take about 20-40 minutes. The route runs along NH66 and turns off towards Kovalam.

  • By train

    Cab: ₹400–700 · Bus: ₹15–100 (sources vary)

Thiruvananthapuram Central (TVC) is the nearest major station, about 15 km away, with trains from across India. Take an app cab or auto for 30-45 minutes. Otherwise take a city bus towards Kovalam, from the station or East Fort (the East Fort bus stand is a short ride from the station).

  • By road and local buses

    Auto within Kovalam: ₹100–250

KSRTC and other buses run from Thiruvananthapuram to Kovalam regularly. Self-drivers take NH66 and then the Kovalam road, about 30-45 minutes in normal traffic. From the Kovalam junction, autos cover the last stretch to Lighthouse Beach. Beach roads fill up in December-January, so park early.

Where to stay

  • Budget guesthouses and homestays

    ₹1,000–2,500 / night

Small hotels and homestays around Lighthouse Beach Road and Hawa Beach are the cheapest way to sleep near the sand. Rates jump in December-January and around Christmas and New Year, so book early for those dates. Ask about the walking distance to the beach before booking, because some listings are far from the shore.

  • Mid-range beach hotels

    ₹2,500–6,000 / night

Beach-facing hotels and Ayurveda resorts with AC rooms, a restaurant and sometimes a pool sit mostly along Lighthouse Beach and Samudra Beach. They suit families and couples who want some comfort without a big splurge. Off-season (April-September) usually brings noticeable discounts.

  • Luxury resorts

    ₹10,000–30,000 / night

A handful of cliff-top and beachfront resorts offer private beach access, spas and several restaurants. Prices swing widely by season and room type, so compare a few booking sites before paying.

Things to do

  • Beach time and sunsets

    Free

Lighthouse Beach is the easiest for a swim inside the flagged, lifeguard-patrolled zone. Hawa and Samudra beaches are better for walking and watching fishing boats than for swimming. Go early morning or after 4 pm to avoid the heat.

  • Climb Vizhinjam Lighthouse

    ₹20–45 incl. camera

The red-and-white lighthouse at the southern end of Lighthouse Beach gives a wide view over the bays. Most sources list a ticket of about ₹20 for adults, with a camera fee extra. Sources disagree on opening hours; most say it is closed on Mondays and entry stops around 5-5:30 pm. Check on the day.

  • Ayurveda massage and wellness

    ₹1,000–3,500 per massage session

Many Kovalam centres sell massages and short Ayurveda programmes. The monsoon months are often pitched as the best season for treatments. Pick a centre with qualified therapists and agree on the price in advance, since quotes differ a lot.

  • Day trips

Cab for a half day: ₹1,500–3,000

Vizhinjam rock-cut cave temple and the harbour are close by. Poovar backwaters and Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram city work as half-day add-ons. The temple has a strict dress code, so check the current rules before you go.

Food

  • Seafood shacks on Lighthouse Beach Road

    ₹300–900 per person

Many restaurants line the beachfront road and sell the day's catch by weight, grilled, curried or fried, along with Kerala meals. Ask the price per kg and the cooking charge before ordering, and compare two or three places. Prices are higher here than in town.

  • Kerala meals and snacks

    ₹100–300 per person

For cheaper meals, head to small local eateries on the main road away from the beachfront. Look for fish curry meals, appam with stew, parotta with beef or veg curry, and fresh tender coconut. Vegetarian options are easy to find too.

  • Cafés and rooftop dinners

    ₹500–1,200 per person

A few cafés and resort restaurants serve continental food and desserts with a sea view. Come around sunset for the best seating. Card and UPI acceptance varies, so carry some cash.

Safety & permits

Permits & entry

  • Entry rules for Indian travellers

No entry fee for the beaches

Kovalam does not generally need any permit or entry pass for Indian citizens. Carry a valid photo ID for hotel check-in. Rules change, so confirm on the official Kerala Tourism site (keralatourism.org) before you travel.

  • Lighthouse ticket

The Vizhinjam Lighthouse charges a small ticket, mostly quoted at ₹20 for adults, less for children and seniors, with extra for cameras. Timings and fees differ between sources, so treat them as a guide and check at the gate.

  • Beach conduct and alcohol

Swim only in the flagged zone and follow lifeguard whistles. Drinking on public beach sections is generally not allowed, and modest dress is expected away from resort areas. Local rules can change, so check with your hotel or Kerala Tourism.

  • Pulinkudi construction halt

In October 2026, the Kerala High Court ordered a temporary stop to construction at Pulinkudi beach, just south of the Vizhinjam port, until clearances are clarified. The next hearing is on 25 November 2026. Check local news before you go if you plan to visit that stretch.

Safety notes

Swim only inside the flagged zone at Lighthouse Beach, where lifeguards are posted, mostly in peak season. Rip currents run outside it. Swimming is generally prohibited in the June-August monsoon, even when the sea looks calm. Hawa and Samudra beaches are rocky, with stronger currents. Use only licensed water-sports operators. Agree prices for massages, boat rides and taxis beforehand. Police patrol the main beach at night. Women travelling solo usually find it manageable, but stick to lit stretches after dark and book a stay within walking distance of the beach.

Phone network & ATMs

Major Indian mobile networks generally work well in Kovalam, and most hotels offer Wi-Fi. Speeds can dip in the crowded December-January season. Cab apps work from Thiruvananthapuram, though local auto drivers often prefer to negotiate. Check your own operator's coverage before you go.
