Overview
Munnar is a hill town in Kerala's Idukki district. It sits at roughly 1,600 m and is surrounded by tea estates. There is no airport or railway station in town, so most people fly to Kochi or take a train to Aluva or Ernakulam and finish the trip by road, which takes about 3–4.5 hours. Plan around Eravikulam National Park for Nilgiri tahr, a sunrise jeep ride to Kolukkumalai, and unhurried drives past dams and viewpoints. September to February is the comfortable window. Monsoon is greener and cheaper but wetter, with landslide and leech risk. Eravikulam shuts for the calving season in early year.

How to reach
By air: Cochin International (COK)
Airport taxi to Munnar: ₹3,500–6,000 per car (estimate, confirm before booking)COK is the usual gateway. Sources put the road distance at roughly 110–125 km, and the drive via Aluva, Kothamangalam and Adimali takes about 3–4.5 hours depending on traffic and stops. Prepaid cabs are available at the airport. Madurai and Coimbatore airports are alternatives if you are coming from Tamil Nadu, but the roads are longer and hillier.
By train: Aluva or Ernakulam, then road
Bus or shared ride from Aluva/Ernakulam: ₹100–400 (estimate)Munnar has no railway station. Aluva (about 110 km) and Ernakulam Junction (about 120–130 km) are the practical railheads. Book a train to either one, then take a KSRTC bus, shared taxi or private cab up the hill. Aluva is handy if you want to reach the bus stand quickly. Try to arrive before mid-afternoon so you are not climbing hairpin roads in the dark.
By road and KSRTC bus
Own car fuel and tolls from Kochi: ₹1,500–2,500 return (estimate)KSRTC buses run from Kochi/Ernakulam and Aluva to Munnar. The trip takes roughly 3.5–4 hours, and early-morning departures are the most convenient. Self-drivers come via Kothamangalam–Adimali. The road has many bends and heavy tourist traffic on weekends and holidays. Coming from Tamil Nadu, routes via Madurai–Theni–Bodinayakanur or Udumalpet are used, and they take about 4.5–6 hours.
Where to stay
Budget rooms and hostels around Munnar town
₹700–2,000 / night (estimate)Simple lodges and a few backpacker hostels cluster near the town centre and the bus station. They are convenient if you arrive by bus and want to walk to restaurants. Rooms near the main road can be noisy, so ask for one at the back. Prices rise sharply on weekends, long weekends and the Onam period, so book ahead for those dates.
Homestays in Pothamedu, Chinnakanal and Devikulam side
₹1,800–5,000 / night (estimate)Family-run homestays and estate bungalows give you quieter evenings, home-cooked Kerala meals and valley views. They are usually 5–20 km out of town, so check the access road if you have a low-clearance car and confirm that the host can arrange a jeep or taxi.
Resorts and plantation stays
₹5,000–15,000+ / night (estimate)Mid-range to upper-end resorts on the hills offer pools, spas and balcony views. Rain and fog can hide the views for days in monsoon, so ask about a flexible-date policy. If you are travelling with children or parents, check how many steps there are between the room and the parking area.
Things to do
See Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam National Park
Entry about ₹200 per Indian adult plus booking fee (confirm on official site)The tourism zone at Rajamala is the place for close views of Nilgiri tahr. Private vehicles do not go up. You park at the base and ride a forest-department bus. Book online in advance for peak months and on weekends. Food cannot be carried in, though water is allowed. Rules, fees and timings differ between sources, so check the official booking site before you go.
Sunrise at Kolukkumalai
Jeep ₹2,500–5,000 per jeep depending on pickup point (estimate)Kolukkumalai is reached by off-road jeep from Suryanelli, and the last stretch is too rough for ordinary cars. Many people leave Munnar around 3:15–3:30 AM to catch the first light over tea slopes. Wear warm layers and good shoes. Rates are usually quoted per jeep (up to 6 people), so splitting with friends works out cheaper. Prices vary a lot between operators, so compare a few.
Tea estates, Tea Museum and viewpoints
Local taxi for a day around town: ₹2,000–3,500 (estimate)Spend an afternoon on the tea-estate roads around Munnar, visiting the Tea Museum at Nallathanni and stopping at Mattupetty Dam and a couple of viewpoints. Weekend traffic on these roads is slow, so start earlier than you think you need to. Opening days and hours for museums and boating change, so confirm locally.
Neelakurinji bloom (only some years)
Check current forest-department noticesNeelakurinji flowers in cycles of roughly 12 years. In 2026, local reports mentioned flowering around Chokramudi and the Mattupetty–Korandakkad hills, with timed tickets managed by the forest department at Chokramudi. Reports said the bloom would fade around mid-October. If you are reading this late in the season, don't plan a trip around it. Sources disagree on the next big bloom (about 2030 or 2037), so check current news.
Food
Kerala meals and parottas in town
₹120–350 per meal (estimate)Small hotels in Munnar town serve rice meals with fish or veg curries, plus parotta with beef, chicken or veg curry, appam and stew. Lunch is the best-value meal, and many places run out of the day's specials by mid-afternoon. Vegetarians will find plenty of options, but ask whether the sambar or curry has meat or fish stock.
Tea, cardamom and spice shopping
₹150–800 per packet depending on grade (estimate)Local tea and cardamom make easy gifts. Tea estate shops and factory outlets sell packets, and spice shops in town sell cardamom, pepper, cloves and cinnamon. Compare prices at two or three shops and check the packing date. Fresh chocolate, which is sold in many stalls, melts quickly in a hot car.
Homestay dinners and estate breakfasts
₹250–600 per person (estimate)Many homestays cook dinner on request with local ingredients. Tell the host about dietary needs when booking, and ask for dinner by early evening because many kitchens in the hills close early. Breakfast before a sunrise trip may need to be packed, so request it the night before.
Safety & permits
Permits & entry
Eravikulam National Park entry
About ₹200 per Indian adult (some pages show older, lower fees)Entry is by ticket only, with visitors carried on forest-department buses. Booking is available online on the official Eravikulam booking site, and a photo ID is generally needed for each visitor. The park is closed for the Nilgiri tahr calving season. The official site says February 1 to April 1, while other sources say February–March, so check the dates. Fees and hours are quoted differently across sources, and rules change, so confirm on the official site.
Kolukkumalai and other jeep routes
Jeep ₹2,500–5,000 (estimate)Kolukkumalai is on the Tamil Nadu side near the Kerala border. Operators usually bundle the entry or gate pass into the jeep charge, though some quote it separately. Ask what is included before paying. Rules, closures and fees change, so confirm with your hotel or on the official sites.
Neelakurinji viewing areas
Check current noticesIn 2026, Chokramudi used a timed-entry system run by the Kerala Forest Department, and private vehicles were reportedly restricted near the site, with shuttle buses from Munnar. Some Korandakkad areas are on private plantation land, so permission may be needed. These arrangements are specific to bloom years and may have ended, so confirm on the forest-department website or with Munnar tourism offices.
General rules to expect
Plastic restrictions, no-litter rules and fines apply in protected areas, and drones usually need permission. Rules change, and sources do not always agree, so confirm with the official Kerala Tourism and Forest Department websites before you travel.
Safety notes
Hill roads are steep and narrow with many hairpin bends. Avoid driving at night, especially in rain and fog. Landslides can occur in heavy monsoon. Wear shoes with good grip and carry a rain jacket. Leeches are common in grass and forest in the wet months. Wild elephants and gaur can appear near forest roads, so don't get out of the vehicle to approach them. Mornings and nights are cold. Book jeeps through your hotel or a known operator and agree on the price, route and number of stops first. Solo and women travellers generally find the main town manageable, but keep late-evening plans simple and share your plans with someone. In an emergency, dial 112.
Phone network & ATMs
Mobile signal is usually fine in Munnar town but gets patchy in valleys, estates, Eravikulam and on the way to Kolukkumalai. Download offline maps before you leave Kochi and don't rely on live navigation. UPI and cards work in town, but carry some cash for jeeps, small shops and tea stalls.
