Ruined Vijayanagara capital among boulder hills and banana fields, best explored slowly on foot, cycle or scooter.

Prices and timings are estimates, so please confirm before you book. Spotted something wrong or out of date? Tell us.

Overview

Hampi is the old Vijayanagara capital on the Tungabhadra, in Karnataka's Ballari district. Temples, bazaars and royal enclosures are spread over rocky hills and farmland. Most travellers base themselves in Hampi Bazaar (near Virupaksha Temple), across the river on the north bank, or in Hosapete, 13 km away. Two full days covers the main ruins. Three lets you add a sunrise climb, a coracle crossing and the quieter Anegundi side. Winter is the comfortable season. Summer is very hot, and the river can be too high for coracles in the monsoon.

How to reach

  • Train to Hosapete Junction (HPT)

Sleeper to 2AC fares vary; book early for Oct–Feb

Hampi has no railway station. Book to Hosapete Junction (HPT), about 13 km away. The overnight Hampi Express links Bengaluru and Hosapete and is the usual pick from Bengaluru. Sources put it at roughly a 9-hour journey, arriving around 7 AM. Check current timings and days on IRCTC or NTES, as schedules change.

  • Hosapete to Hampi (last 13 km)

    Bus ₹20–50, auto ₹200–400, cab ₹400–700

State buses run from Hosapete bus stand to Hampi, roughly every 20–30 minutes in the daytime, and are the cheapest option. Autos and cabs wait outside the station and bus stand. The auto fare isn't fixed, so agree the price before you get in. Confirm the last bus time at the stand, since it can change by season.

  • By road from Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Goa

    Overnight bus ₹700–1,800

Bengaluru to Hospet is about 330–350 km and takes 6–9 hours depending on how you travel. Drivers usually take NH48 and then NH50 via Chitradurga. Overnight buses connect Hampi or Hosapete with Bengaluru and Goa. Many travellers prefer the overnight option to save a hotel night.

  • By air

    Airport to Hampi cab ₹1,200–2,000

The nearest airport is Jindal Vijaynagar (Toranagallu), roughly 30 km from Hospet, with flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Flight schedules change often, so check current routes. Many people still choose Bengaluru plus train or bus.

Where to stay

  • Hampi Bazaar and Virupaksha side

    ₹500–2,500 / night

Staying here lets you reach Virupaksha Temple and the riverside ghats on foot, and start your day before the crowds. Guesthouses and homestay-style rooms are mostly simple. Book ahead for November to February weekends and holidays.

  • North bank (Virupapur Gaddi) and Anegundi

    ₹400–2,500 / night

These are quieter, with rice fields and rocks nearby, and are popular with climbers and longer-stay travellers. Sources disagree on how many guesthouses on the Virupapur Gaddi side are operating, so check a stay is open before you cross. Coracles stop around sunset, and the road back to the main side is a long detour.

  • Hosapete (cheap and convenient)

    ₹1,000–4,000 / night

Hosapete has the widest choice of hotels, from budget lodges to business hotels, plus easy bus and train links. The trade-off is a 13 km commute to the ruins each morning. It works well for short trips and late-night arrivals.

  • Resorts and heritage-style stays

    ₹5,000–15,000 / night

A few larger resorts sit on the Hospet–Hampi side of the area, with pools and gardens. They suit families and anyone wanting a comfortable base after hot days of walking. Compare cancellation terms before booking.

Things to do

  • Royal Centre and Vittala Temple in one day

Guide ₹800–2,000 for a few hours

Plan the Royal Centre (Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, Zenana Enclosure) in the cool early hours. Reach the Vittala Temple, with its stone chariot, when it opens. Do these before the midday heat. A guide helps if you want the history, but guide fees aren't regulated, so fix the price first.

  • Sunrise from Matanga Hill

    Free

The climb to Matanga Hill is short but over uneven rock, and it starts in the dark for sunrise. Wear closed shoes and carry a torch and water. Go with a friend, and avoid climbing alone in poor light.

  • Coracle crossing and the north bank

    ₹20–50 one way

Round basket boats carry people (and bicycles) across the Tungabhadra near Virupaksha Temple. Fares reported by travellers vary, so ask before boarding and carry cash. Services pause during high water in the monsoon and stop around sunset.

  • Cycle or scooter around the ruins

    Cycle ₹100–200 / day, scooter ₹400–700 / day

The sites are spread out, so a rented cycle or scooter makes the day easier. Shops in Hampi Bazaar rent both. Check brakes and fuel, and park only where it's allowed.

Food

  • Rooftop cafés in Hampi Bazaar

    ₹100–400 per meal

Cafés around the bazaar serve thalis, South Indian breakfasts, pasta, pancakes and fresh juices, often with a view of the temple gopuram. Most menus lean towards vegetarian. Ask whether a place serves alcohol or non-veg, as rules around the temple area are local and strict.

  • Local Karnataka meals and tea stalls

    ₹60–200 per meal

Look for simple eateries serving idli, dosa, rice-sambar and chapati meals. Roadside tea and snack stalls near the ticketed sites are good for quick stops. Carry your own water bottle and refill from safe sources.

  • Hosapete restaurants

    ₹150–500 per meal

If you stay in Hosapete, you'll find larger restaurants serving North Karnataka meals such as jowar rotis, as well as the usual North and South Indian menus. They're handy after a late return from the ruins.

Safety & permits

Permits & entry

  • No permit for Indian citizens (generally)

    Confirm on asi.nic.in and karnatakatourism.org

Indian visitors usually don't need a special permit to walk around Hampi. Many ruins and temples can be visited free during daylight. Rules change and local restrictions can be added, so confirm on the official ASI and Karnataka Tourism sites before you go.

  • Ticketed monuments

Roughly ₹30–40 for Indian adults; verify at the counter

The Vittala Temple and the Royal Centre group (Zenana Enclosure, Elephant Stables and others) are ticketed. Sources differ on the Indian adult fee: some say about ₹30 for Vittala, others about ₹40. Children under 15 are reported to enter free. Ask at the counter whether one ticket covers several monuments that day, and keep it handy.

  • Visiting hours

    Verify timings on the day

Open-air ruins are generally open from sunrise to sunset. Ticketed sites are reported to open at around 6 AM or 8:30 AM and close around 5:30–6 PM, and sources differ. Virupaksha is a working temple and may close in the afternoon. Check before you go.

  • Respect rules on monuments and bouldering

    Rules change; confirm locally

Don't climb on, sit on or touch carved structures. Climbing is reportedly banned in the core protected zone and allowed only in some buffer areas, so ask locally. Cover shoulders and knees at temples. Drone use usually needs permission, so check with authorities.

Safety notes

Hampi is generally considered safe, and many solo and women travellers visit. Even so, avoid isolated boulder areas and unlit paths after dark. Don't cross by coracle late in the day, since services stop around sunset and in high water. Midday heat is strong, so carry water, a hat and sunscreen, and wear sturdy shoes on rock. Use trusted autos and guides, and agree on prices first. Check local news for flood or access restrictions in the monsoon.

Phone network & ATMs

Mobile data usually works in Hampi Bazaar and Hosapete, but may be patchy on the north bank, around hills and near the river. Download offline maps and tickets before you arrive. ATMs are limited in the village, so carry some cash for coracles, tea stalls and small shops. Hosapete has more banks and ATMs.
