Overview
Gokarna is a small pilgrim town on Karnataka's Arabian Sea coast. Its old Mahabaleshwar Temple sits close to the main beach, and a few kilometres south are Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches. You can link them on a half-day coastal walk or hop between them by boat. October to March is the comfortable window, with calm seas and open shacks. In the monsoon the sea is rough, boats stop and the trails turn slippery. The nightlife is much quieter than in Goa. Carry cash, and dress modestly in town and at the temple.

How to reach
By train
Station to town by auto: ₹200–400 (estimate)Gokarna Road station (GOK) on the Konkan Railway is about 10 km from town, but only some trains stop there. Ankola (about 20 km) and Kumta (about 25-30 km, sources vary) are the better-served alternatives. From the station, take an auto, a taxi or an occasional local bus. Check current train timetables on IRCTC before booking.
By air
Goa airport to Gokarna by taxi: ₹3,000–4,500 (estimate)Gokarna has no airport. Hubballi (HBX) is the closest, roughly 90-100 km and 2-2.5 hours away by road. Goa is better for flight choice: Dabolim is about 140 km away, and Mopa is listed by Karnataka Tourism at about 175 km. Taxis and buses cover the last stretch.
By bus or road
Bus from Goa: ₹300–600; Bengaluru overnight: ₹800–1,800 (estimates)KSRTC and private buses link Gokarna with Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Hubballi and Goa. Overnight buses from Bengaluru take about 9-10 hours by road, and the distance is around 480 km. Goa to Gokarna takes about 4-5 hours. If you are driving, the route uses NH48 and NH66.
Getting around once there
Auto to Om/Kudle: ₹150–400 (estimate)The town is walkable. Autos and taxis run to Kudle and Om beaches, which are roughly 5-6 km out. Fishing boats run from Om Beach to Half Moon and Paradise beaches, but only when the sea is calm. Agree on prices before you get in.
Where to stay
Beach huts and guesthouses (Kudle and Om)
₹800–3,500 / nightBasic huts and rooms with a sea view are clustered around Kudle and Om beaches, and they are the usual choice for backpackers. Facilities are simple and the power supply can be patchy. In December-January and around New Year, book ahead. Many places cut prices a lot or close in the monsoon.
Homestays and budget hotels in town
₹1,000–4,500 / nightRooms near the main road, the temple and the bus stand suit pilgrims and anyone who wants to be close to transport. You can walk to the temple and the market, and take an auto to the beaches. Mid-range hotels and small resorts are spread between town and the beaches.
Resorts for a bigger budget
₹6,000–15,000+ / nightA few higher-end resorts sit on the headlands and outside town, with pools and sea views. They are quieter, but you will need a taxi to go anywhere. Check recent reviews and the monsoon policy before booking.
Things to do
Walk the beach trek
Free; boat shortcuts ₹50–300 per person (estimate)The classic route runs from Gokarna Main Beach to Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise. Sources put it at about 6-10 km, and it takes 3-6 hours with stops. It is easy to moderate, with rocky and steep bits near the end. Start early, wear proper shoes rather than slippers, carry plenty of water, and skip it in the monsoon.
Temple darshan at Mahabaleshwar
Free (donations optional)Visit early in the morning, when the queues are shorter. Entry is free and darshan runs in two sessions, roughly 6:00-12:30 and 17:00-20:00. Check timings locally, as special days and festivals such as Mahashivratri change the schedule.
Water sports and dolphin boats at Om Beach
₹300–2,000 per activity (estimate)Om Beach has jet skis, banana boats, kayaks and dolphin-spotting rides in the season. Compare prices between operators and look at the sea conditions before you book. Swim only where the water is calm, because currents can be strong in places.
Sunset at Kudle and a quiet town walk
FreeKudle's wide sand is a good place for sunset, with cafés on the shore. In town, walk the temple street and the market and go to Koti Tirtha, the temple tank. Dress modestly in the town and the temple quarter.
Food
Beach shacks
₹150–500 per mealShacks on Kudle, Om and the trek route serve seafood, thalis, noodles, pasta, fresh juice and chai. The menus are broad, and the quality varies from shack to shack. Fish is generally freshest in the season. Many beachfront places shut during the monsoon.
Local meals in town
₹80–250 per mealSmall restaurants near the temple and bus stand serve South Indian breakfasts, coastal Karnataka thalis and simple vegetarian meals. They are cheap and quick, and a good choice before a long trek day.
Carry cash and water
Keep ₹1,000–2,000 in small notes (suggestion)ATMs can run short in peak season, and the remote beaches have no card machines or signal. Carry cash and drinking water before you set out on the trek.
Safety & permits
Permits & entry
Entry to the beaches and the town
No entry fee for beaches (as per sources)Gokarna's beaches and the town are generally free to enter, and sources do not list a permit for Indian visitors. Rules, boat services and local restrictions change, so confirm on the official Karnataka Tourism website or locally before you go.
Mahabaleshwar Temple rules
Entry is free, and the inner sanctum is reportedly restricted to Hindus. Sources disagree on the dress code. Karnataka Tourism says it is strictly enforced (dhoti for men, saree or salwar suit for women, no jeans or shorts), while some other sites say neat Western wear is accepted. Dress conservatively, and confirm with the temple trust or on the official site.
Water and trek restrictions
Swimming and boats are restricted or closed when the sea is rough, mainly June-September. Follow lifeguard and local boatmen's advice. Rules change, so check with local authorities and Karnataka Tourism.
Safety notes
Do not swim in the monsoon or in rough seas, and watch for currents at Main Beach and Om Beach. Do the beach trek in daylight, in a group, and not in the rain, since the rocks get slippery. Check tides and boat services before you set off. Dress modestly in town. Women travelling alone should use the busier beaches after dark and avoid the isolated stretches. Keep valuables in a waterproof bag.
Phone network & ATMs
Mobile signal is fine in town and at Kudle and Om, but patchy on the trail. Paradise Beach and parts of Half Moon have little or none. Power and WiFi at beach huts can be unreliable, so download maps and tickets before you leave town. Carry cash, because ATMs run out in peak season.
