Foothill base for Tirumala's Venkateswara temple: plan your darshan slot, your dress and your climb before you arrive.

Prices and timings are estimates, so please confirm before you book. Spotted something wrong or out of date? Tell us.

Overview

Tirupati is the town at the foot of the Seshachalam hills. Most visitors come for the Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, about 22 km uphill by road. The trip works best when planned in advance. Decide between a paid online slot and a free token collected in town, pack traditional clothes, and keep your original Aadhaar handy. Tirupati itself has the Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanur, Kapila Theertham at the foot of the hills, and plenty of budget lodges near the station and bus stand. Winter is the comfortable season. Weekends, school holidays and festivals bring long queues. Two Brahmotsavams fall in 2026, but sources give different dates, so check TTD before you go.

How to reach

  • By train

Station to Tirumala about 22โ€“26 km; sleeper/3AC fares vary by origin, check IRCTC

Tirupati Railway Station (TPTY) is the main railhead and connects to Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other big cities. Renigunta Junction, about 10 km away, is a fallback if your train terminates there. Buses to the hills wait outside the station when trains arrive. TTD's Vishnu Nivasam rest house is directly opposite the station.

  • By air

Airport to Tirupati by taxi roughly โ‚น400โ€“700

Tirupati Airport (TIR) is at Renigunta, roughly 15 km from town and about 38 km from Tirumala. Direct flights serve Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and a few other cities. A prepaid taxi counter operates at the airport. Flight schedules change often, so confirm routes on airline apps.

  • By road

Chennai/Bengaluru bus roughly โ‚น300โ€“1,200 depending on bus type

The APSRTC Central Bus Station in Tirupati gets buses from across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Chennai is about 140 km away and Bengaluru about 250 km. Tirupati is easy to reach by overnight bus from both. If you drive, finish the ghat road before dark and expect a security check at Alipiri.

  • Tirupati to Tirumala

Bus roughly โ‚น50โ€“100 one way; shared/private taxi โ‚น900โ€“1,500

APSRTC buses climb the 22 km ghat road in about an hour and run frequently from the bus station and the railway station. Taxis are quicker but pricier. TTD runs free buses to Alipiri and Srivari Mettu, but only for pilgrims walking up. Sources disagree on whether private cars can go all the way up or only to Alipiri. Check with TTD.

Where to stay

  • TTD rest houses and cottages

โ‚น100โ€“2,000 / night depending on room type

TTD runs rooms and dormitories in Tirupati and Tirumala, which is the cheapest and most convenient option for pilgrims. Vishnu Nivasam, opposite the railway station, and Srinivasam, near the bus stand, sit right next to the token counters. Rooms are booked online in advance, and walk-in availability is unpredictable, especially at weekends. Confirm room rates and booking rules on the TTD site.

  • Budget lodges near the station and bus stand

    โ‚น800โ€“2,000 / night

Dozens of simple lodges sit within walking distance of the station and Central Bus Station. They are fine for a one-night stay before an early darshan. Check reviews for cleanliness and noise, and ask about check-in times, since many pilgrims arrive at odd hours. Prices climb on weekends and festival dates.

  • Mid-range and premium hotels

    โ‚น2,500โ€“7,000 / night

Tirupati has business-style 3 and 4-star hotels with restaurants and airport pick-up, mostly along the main roads and near the bus stand. They suit families who want AC, lifts and room service after a long queue. Book early for Brahmotsavam and Vaikuntha Ekadashi periods.

Things to do

  • Darshan at Tirumala

Free (SSD) or โ‚น300 per person (Special Entry)

The Sri Venkateswara temple is the main reason to come. Choose a โ‚น300 Special Entry slot booked online, a free Slotted Sarva Darshan (SSD) token collected in Tirupati, or the walk-up route. Waits vary widely from a few hours to most of a day. Carry original ID, wear traditional clothes, and allow most of a day.

  • Walk up the Alipiri footpath

Free; bring โ‚น200โ€“500 for water, snacks and luggage handling

Many pilgrims climb the stone steps from Alipiri to Tirumala as a vow or just for the experience. The path has about 3,550 steps and takes roughly three to five hours at a normal pace. Start early, carry water, and wear shoes you can take off easily at the top. Distance figures differ between sources (about 8โ€“11 km), so treat timings as a guide.

  • Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanur

Entry free; auto/cab โ‚น150โ€“400 from town

This temple to Goddess Padmavathi, consort of Venkateswara, is a short drive from Tirupati town. It is usually calmer than Tirumala and can fit into the same day as your arrival. Dress modestly and check the opening hours on the day.

  • Kapila Theertham

    Entry free; local auto โ‚น100โ€“250

Kapila Theertham is a Shiva temple at the foot of the hills, built beside a waterfall. It makes a quick, low-effort stop on the Alipiri side of town, especially for seniors who aren't climbing. The waterfall is strongest after rain.

Food

  • Free meals at Tirumala

Free; check timings on the TTD site

TTD serves free vegetarian meals to pilgrims at its Annaprasadam complex in Tirumala. Queues are long at peak hours, so eat slightly off-peak. This is a practical option if you are watching your budget.

  • Andhra-style meals and tiffin in Tirupati

    โ‚น80โ€“250 per meal

Near the bus stand and station you'll find plenty of pure-veg messes serving rice meals, idli, dosa and pesarattu in the morning. Pesarattu with upma and ginger chutney is worth ordering at breakfast. Hygiene varies, so pick places that are busy with locals.

  • Laddu prasadam

Extra laddus roughly โ‚น50โ€“200 each, check counter rates

The Tirumala laddu is the signature take-home item. A free laddu usually comes with SSD tokens, and more can be bought at the temple counters. Buy only from TTD counters. Sources differ on per-person purchase limits, so check at the counter.

Safety & permits

Permits & entry

  • Entry to Tirupati and Tirumala

    No permit fee

There is no tourist permit for Indian citizens to visit Tirupati town or Tirumala. Temple darshan itself is regulated by TTD, with slots, ID checks and a dress code. Rules and quotas change, so confirm on the official TTD site (tirumala.org / ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in) before you travel.

  • โ‚น300 Special Entry Darshan

    โ‚น300 per person aged 12+

Book on the official TTD portal or app only. Slots are released in advance, often described as about 90 days or monthly, and popular dates vanish within minutes. Sources differ on the release schedule. A booking is generally up to 6 persons, non-transferable, and needs original ID such as Aadhaar. Children under 12 usually need no ticket. Rules change, so confirm on the TTD site.

  • Free SSD token (Slotted Sarva Darshan)

    Free

Free darshan runs on time-slot tokens, issued offline at TTD counters in Tirupati, such as Srinivasam, Vishnu Nivasam and Bhudevi Complex. Tokens are usually for next-day darshan. Every adult generally needs to be present with original Aadhaar. Counter timings have changed over time, so verify the current hours on the official site.

  • Dress code and temple rules

Lockers and cloakrooms available; carry a small padlock

Traditional dress is required for Special Entry darshan and sevas: dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men, and saree, half-saree or salwar kameez for women. It is widely advised for free darshan too. Footwear, phones and electronic items are not allowed into the queue or temple, so use the locker counters. Confirm current rules with TTD.

Safety notes

Book tickets and rooms only through official TTD channels. Fake websites and touts selling 'quick darshan' are common, and nobody should be paid for a free SSD token. Keep original ID on you at all times, since entry can be refused over a mismatch. Take it slow on the Alipiri steps, with water and a break every hour, and avoid it in midday heat. Drive the ghat road carefully. Queues get very crowded on weekends and festivals. Keep valuables in lockers and stay close to your group. Solo women generally find the pilgrim crowd manageable, but avoid isolated stretches late at night.

Phone network & ATMs

Mobile data and UPI generally work well in Tirupati town. Phones aren't allowed in the temple queue, so deposit them at lockers and keep some cash for lockers, buses and small shops. Network quality on the hill and footpaths can vary by operator, so download tickets and offline maps before you set out.
