A quiet Konkan beach village where the Karli river meets the sea, with a sea fort, easy scuba and Malvani fish thalis.

Prices and timings are estimates, so please confirm before you book. Spotted something wrong or out of date? Tell us.

Overview

Tarkarli is a small fishing village in Malvan taluka, Sindhudurg district, close to the Goa border. Come for the long, calm beach, beginner-friendly snorkelling and scuba, backwater boat rides near Devbag, and a ferry to Sindhudurg Fort from Malvan. Food is Malvani: fish, coconut and fiery masala. October to March is the comfortable window. Between June and September rough seas pause most water sports and often the fort ferries too. Public transport is thin, so plan the last leg from Kudal or Malvan.

How to reach

  • By train (Konkan Railway)

Kudal station to Tarkarli by taxi: โ‚น900โ€“1,800 | about 1โ€“1.25 hrs

Tarkarli has no station of its own. Kudal is the usual railhead, roughly 32โ€“36 km away, and most Konkan trains stop there. Sindhudurg station is a bit closer (about 26โ€“31 km) but fewer trains halt. Kankavli is further, around 50 km. Sources give slightly different distances, so treat these as approximate. From the station, take a taxi, an auto, or an ST bus via Malvan. Kudal bus stand is about 2 km from the station.

  • By air

Goa airport to Tarkarli by taxi: โ‚น3,500โ€“6,500

Sindhudurg (Chipi) airport is the closest, about 25 km from Tarkarli. Flights are limited and the schedule has changed often, so check current routes before you plan around it. Goa's airports are the dependable fallback. Dabolim is roughly 130 km away, and the taxi ride takes about 2.5โ€“4 hours depending on traffic and the border crossing.

  • By road and bus

Mumbai/Pune to Kudal by bus: โ‚น900โ€“3,500

From Mumbai it is roughly 470โ€“540 km along NH66, usually a full day's drive. From Pune it is about 390โ€“410 km, often routed via Kolhapur. Overnight buses run from Mumbai and Pune to Kudal and Malvan, including private operators. From Malvan you take a short local bus or auto to Tarkarli, about 6โ€“8 km.

  • Getting around once there

Local auto or cab for a day: โ‚น800โ€“2,000

Distances are short but public transport is sparse. Autos and shared jeeps run between Malvan and Tarkarli, and a few local buses ply the same road. Many visitors hire an auto or cab for a day to cover the beach, Devbag and the Malvan jetty. Agree the fare before you start. Two-wheeler rentals are possible at some stays; check availability when you book.

Where to stay

  • MTDC Tarkarli Resort

    โ‚น2,500โ€“6,500 / night

The state tourism corporation runs cottages, huts and Konkani-style houses a short walk from the beach, and it also has a scuba centre. It is the easiest official option for families and first-timers. Tariffs vary a lot by room type, AC and season, and taxes are added. Book through MTDC's own channels and check current rates.

  • Homestays and small lodges

    โ‚น800โ€“2,000 / night

Village homestays and simple lodges are the budget route and often include home-cooked Malvani meals. Facilities vary, so read recent reviews and confirm AC, hot water and the distance to the beach. Book ahead for Diwali, Christmas and New Year, when everything fills up.

  • Beach resorts

    โ‚น4,000โ€“9,000 / night

A cluster of private beach resorts and wooden-hut properties sits along the shore, with some offering pools, packages and arranged water sports. Compare package prices with booking activities yourself, since bundled rates are not always cheaper.

Things to do

  • Take the ferry to Sindhudurg Fort

Ferry + entry: โ‚น50โ€“150 per person

The sea fort stands on an island a few hundred metres off Malvan, and the boat ride is about 10โ€“15 minutes. Go early, when it is cooler and the light is better. Sources differ on fort timings, entry fee and closure days, so ask at the jetty on the day. Ferries are often suspended in the monsoon.

  • Try snorkelling or scuba

    Snorkelling โ‚น500โ€“1,000 | Scuba โ‚น1,100โ€“3,500

Intro dives need no prior certification. Operators give a short briefing and a guide stays with you. The whole outing, including the boat ride, takes about 3 hours for roughly 30 minutes of diving. Use a registered operator, check what is included, and expect water sports to stop in the monsoon. Book 2โ€“3 days ahead in peak weeks.

  • Boat out to Tsunami Island and Devbag Sangam

Boat ride and activity combos: โ‚น300โ€“1,500

At Devbag, the Karli river meets the sea. Boats run through the backwaters to a sandbank that locals call Tsunami Island. Jet ski, banana boat and kayak rides are on offer there. It is calmer than the main beach, and the drive from Tarkarli is short.

  • Dolphin-spotting boat ride

    โ‚น300โ€“600 per person

Operators run early-morning boat trips to look for dolphins, though sightings are never guaranteed. Ask whether the rate is per boat or per person, and go early when the sea is calm.

  • Walk Tarkarli and Malvan beaches

    Free

Tarkarli beach is a long, easy walk, especially around sunset. Malvan's market and beach make a good half-day if you want shopping or street snacks.

Food

  • Malvani fish thali

    โ‚น250โ€“650 per meal

The thali usually pairs fried or curried fish (pomfret, surmai, bangda, prawns) with rice, solkadhi and bhakri or chapati. The masala is spicy, so say so if you want it milder. Small family-run places near the beach and in Malvan often beat the big resort restaurants on value.

  • Vegetarian and shared options

    โ‚น150โ€“350 per meal

Veg thalis with usov, ghavan or kokum solkadhi are easy to find, but ask in advance at homestays. Pure-veg travellers should check the kitchen setup before booking.

  • Konkan sweets and snacks

    โ‚น100โ€“600 for gifts

Look for kokum syrup, cashew packets and Malvani khaja in Malvan market. Alphonso mangoes arrive from roughly March to May. Buy from sealed or reputable shops if you plan to carry things home.

Safety & permits

Permits & entry

  • No special permit is generally needed for Indian visitors

Domestic travellers do not usually need a permit for Tarkarli beach, Malvan or the fort ferries. Carry a government photo ID for hotel check-in and for any water-sport sign-up. Rules and practices change, so confirm on the official Maharashtra Tourism / MTDC site or with your stay before you go.

  • Fort entry and boat tickets

Visitors usually buy a boat ticket at Malvan Jetty, and some sources say it includes the fort entry. Others list a separate entry fee, and they disagree on opening hours and closing days. Check at the jetty or with MTDC on the day, and expect restrictions when the sea is rough.

  • Water sports and monsoon restrictions

Life jackets are normally compulsory on boats, and operators may ask you to sign a health declaration. A seasonal fishing ban and rough seas in June to September typically suspend boats, scuba and snorkelling. The exact dates change each year, so confirm locally before you travel.

Safety notes

Swim only where lifeguards or operators say it is safe, and avoid the sea completely in the monsoon because of strong currents. Use registered operators who provide life jackets. Skip parasailing in rain or strong wind. Carry sunscreen and water, since the sun is harsh from March to May. The beach is quiet at night, so solo and women travellers are best off staying at established properties and travelling in groups after dark.

Phone network & ATMs

Mobile signal is usually workable in the main village and Malvan, but it can be patchy along backwater stretches and on boats. ATMs are limited in Tarkarli, and Malvan has more, so carry some cash for ferries, local meals and small operators. Many homestays and small operators prefer UPI, but keep cash as a backup.

Places in Tarkarli

Sights

  • Sindhudurg Fort

A 17th-century sea fort on an island just off Malvan, reached by a short ferry. It has ramparts, gateways, wells and a small temple, and the best hours are in the morning.

  • Tarkarli Beach

A long, gently sloping beach with calm water and a laid-back feel. It works for sunset walks, swimming where it is safe, and as the base for most water-sport operators.

Stays

  • MTDC Tarkarli Resort

The state tourism corporation's beachside cottages and huts, a few minutes' walk from the sand. A dependable, official option, and an MTDC scuba centre sits nearby.

Food

  • Malvani Thali

Fish curry, fried fish, solkadhi and rice at small local restaurants and homestays. This is the dish to build a meal around, with veg versions available if you ask ahead.

Activities

  • Scuba and Snorkelling at Tarkarli

Beginner dives and snorkelling trips run from the Tarkarli shore to reefs near the fort. Dives last about 30 minutes in the water, and the season is roughly October to May.

  • Tsunami Island and Devbag Sangam

A backwater boat ride where the Karli river meets the sea, ending at a sandbank with jet ski, kayak and banana boat rides. It is quieter than the main beach.

Getting around

  • Kudal Railway Station

The most useful Konkan Railway stop for Tarkarli, about 32โ€“36 km away. Taxis, autos and ST buses wait outside, but fares are negotiable, so agree before you go.

  • Malvan Jetty

The departure point for ferries to Sindhudurg Fort, and a good place to check the day's sea conditions and ticket details. It is about 6โ€“8 km from Tarkarli by road.
