Overview
Munsiyari sits at about 2,200 m in Pithoragarh district, above the Gori Ganga valley. It is a long road trip from the plains, and the effort pays off with close views of the Panchachuli peaks. Most visitors stay in simple homestays or the KMVN rest house, walk to Nanda Devi temple, do the Khaliya Top trek, and drive to Birthi Falls. It is also the roadhead for the high Milam and Ralam treks. Plan at least three nights, because the road in and out takes most of a day. Skip July–August: landslides and road blocks are common then. Winter brings snow and cold, and road conditions can change at short notice.

How to reach
By road from Kathgodam or Haldwani
Roughly 9–12 hrs from Kathgodam; sources differ on distanceEveryone arrives by road. The usual route runs Kathgodam, Bhimtal, Almora, Bageshwar, Thal and then Munsiyari. Sources put the distance at roughly 245–285 km and the drive at 9–12 hours, so leave by 6–7 am to arrive in daylight. The road is decent as far as Bageshwar and narrower after Thal. From Delhi it is about 600+ km, so most people break the journey near Kathgodam or Almora.
By train and flight
Nearest rail: Kathgodam; nearest regular flights: PantnagarMunsiyari has no railway station or airport. Kathgodam (near Haldwani) is the most used railhead, and Tanakpur is another. Pantnagar is the usual airport for Delhi flights, then a taxi onward. Pithoragarh's Naini Saini airport has limited flights, so check the current schedule before you plan around it. Trains to Kathgodam from Delhi often run overnight, which makes a morning start easy.
By bus and shared jeep
Shared jeep about ₹600–1,000 / seat (older estimate); confirm locallyBuses run from Delhi's Anand Vihar ISBT to Almora, Haldwani and Tanakpur. From there, change to a state bus or shared jeep to Munsiyari. Services from Pithoragarh also exist. The budget route takes longer than a taxi, and you may need to change at Bageshwar or Thal. Ask at the stand for the last departure, because afternoon services thin out.
Private taxi
About ₹5,000–8,000 one way, depending on vehicle and seasonA taxi from Kathgodam or Haldwani is the easiest option for families or groups of 4–6. Fix the fare and the drop point before you leave, and ask whether tolls and night-halt charges are included. Drivers who do this route daily usually know the Thal and Tejam stretches well.
Where to stay
KMVN Tourist Rest House
₹1,500–3,500 / nightThe Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam rest house has a government-property feel, with simple rooms and good mountain views. Reviewers say the amenities are basic, but the location and price work for budget and mid-range travellers. Book through the official KMVN site where possible, and expect rates to change by season.
Homestays in and around the town
₹800–2,500 / night, often with mealsFamily homestays are the most useful option here. Many include home-cooked dinner and breakfast, and hosts can arrange guides and trek logistics. Rooms are basic but clean, and the better ones have a Panchachuli-facing balcony. Ask whether meals and heating are included before you book.
Hotels and mid-range resorts
₹2,500–6,000 / night; premium stays can go higherThe market area has small hotels, and a few better resorts sit slightly outside town. A north-facing room is worth asking for, since it gets the peak view. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for April–June and September–October.
Things to do
Trek to Khaliya Top
Guide about ₹1,000–2,000 / day; confirm locallyThis is the standard first trek from Munsiyari. It is a moderate climb through forest and meadow to a ridge with wide views of Nanda Devi, Panchachuli, Hardeol and Rajrambha. Allow a full day with a guide, or turn it into a multi-day trek. Start early for the clearest skies and carry warm layers, because it gets cold quickly near the top.
Walk to Nanda Devi temple
Free entryA short walk or drive from the market leads to this old hill temple dedicated to Goddess Nanda. Go early in the morning for quiet and clear views of the range. A local fair is held around late September, so expect crowds then.
Birthi Falls and the Kalamuni side
Free; add ₹1,500–3,500 if hiring a taxi for the dayBirthi Falls lies on the road towards Thal and is an easy roadside stop with a short walk. It works well on your way out of town. The Kalamuni Top viewpoint is on the same road. Water levels are highest after the rains, but the road is riskier then.
Tribal Heritage Museum and village walks
Small entry fee, if any; check locallyThe museum records the culture of the Johari Bhotia community that once traded with Tibet. Pair it with a walk through nearby villages such as Sarmoli. Opening hours vary, so check locally.
Milam and Ralam glacier treks
Multi-day; price depends on operator and group sizeMunsiyari is the roadhead for these multi-day treks, which pass through Gori valley villages. The best period is roughly May to early October, outside the monsoon. These need a registered operator or guide and the right paperwork. See the permits section.
Food
Kumaoni thali and home cooking
Home-cooked meal ₹200–400Expect dal, rice, seasonal sabzi, roti, and local specialities such as bhatt ki churkani (black soybean curry), jhangora kheer or mandua rotis, depending on season and host. Homestays usually cook these on request, and a night's notice helps. Vegetarian food is easy to find. Non-veg is available but varies by place.
Market dhabas and tea stalls
₹80–300 / mealThe market area has plain dhabas serving parathas, maggi, momos, chai and thalis. They suit a quick breakfast before a trek or a late return. Kitchens close early in the off-season, so eat by 8–9 pm.
Pack trail food
Snacks ₹100–300 / dayShops near the market stock biscuits, dry fruits and chocolate. Buy these before treks, since village shops on the trail are limited. Carry water or purification tablets for longer walks.
Safety & permits
Permits & entry
Town and general sightseeing
Carry original ID; rules change, so confirm officiallyIndian visitors are generally not asked for a special permit to visit Munsiyari town, Nanda Devi temple or Birthi Falls. Carry a government photo ID for hotel check-in and for any police or ITBP checks on the road. Rules change, so confirm on the official Uttarakhand tourism and Pithoragarh district sites.
Milam and Ralam treks: sources differ
Confirm with SDM Munsiyari or the Pithoragarh district siteThis is a border region, and sources disagree. A 2023 PTI report in The Tribune said ITBP had stopped requiring an inner-line permit for Milam. Operator and trekking sites from 2025 still describe an ILP from the SDM office in Munsiyari plus ITBP clearance. Treat the requirement as unsettled and confirm with the SDM office, ITBP or a registered operator before you go.
Forest permits and drones
Fees vary; get a receipt and keep copiesTreks in forest areas may need forest-department fees or trek tickets. Carry printed copies for check posts. Avoid flying a drone in border areas without written permission. Check for updates on the official sites before travel.
Safety notes
Landslides are common in July–August, and the road can close for hours or days at any time of year after heavy rain or snow. Drive in daylight and avoid night driving on the Thal–Munsiyari stretch. Winter brings snow and ice, so check road status with your host or the district office. On Khaliya Top and the higher Milam and Ralam treks, ascend gradually and watch for altitude sickness. Go with a local guide, carry rain and warm layers, and avoid starting late in the day. Medical facilities in town are basic, and serious cases mean a long road trip.
Phone network & ATMs
Mobile coverage is patchy and varies by operator and spot. Expect weak or no signal on treks and in smaller villages. Wi-Fi at homestays can be slow. Download offline maps, carry some cash because ATMs can run empty, and tell someone your route before a trek. Check with your host about your operator's coverage.
