Prices and timings are estimates, so please confirm before you book. Spotted something wrong or out of date? Tell us.
Overview
Fatehpur Sikri is a walled Mughal city on a ridge. Akbar built it in the 1500s and left it within about 15 years, reportedly because of water shortages. Today it is a UNESCO site with courtyards, palaces and a large mosque. Most people come from Agra, roughly 35–40 km away. Budget 3–4 hours, or half a day if you want to go slowly. Go between October and March, and arrive early to beat the crowds and the heat. Entry for Indian citizens is a small fee, and children under 15 get in free. Rules and timings change, so check the ASI site before you leave.

How to reach
By bus from Agra
₹40–100 one way (estimate)Buses run from Agra's Idgah bus stand to Fatehpur Sikri, and they are the cheapest option. Expect roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Sources disagree on first and last departures, so ask at the stand. One guide mentions a 6 am start and a 7 pm last bus. From the town stop, walk or take a local ride to the monument gates.
By train
₹20–110 depending on class (estimate)Fatehpur Sikri has its own railway station. A few trains also run between Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, but schedules are thin and some run only on certain days. Check IRCTC or NTES for the current timetable before you plan around a train. The station is a short hop from town, and local rides run from there to the monument.
By taxi or self-drive
₹1,800–3,500 round trip from Agra (estimate)A cab from Agra takes about 35–60 minutes over roughly 38 km, and drivers at the Idgah stand quote round trips. Agree the price and waiting time before you set off. Delhi is about 230 km away. On a Delhi–Agra road trip, you can stop here on the way, usually via the Agra–Jaipur direction. Confirm parking arrangements on the day.
From Jaipur or Delhi
Check current fares on UPSRTC / IRCTCMany state buses on the Agra–Jaipur route are said to stop at Fatehpur Sikri, so ask the conductor before boarding. From Delhi, most people go to Agra by train and do Fatehpur Sikri as a day trip. A direct overnight option exists but check timings. The nearest airport is Agra, but flights are limited, and Delhi is the usual gateway.
Where to stay
Base yourself in Agra
₹600–1,800 / night budget; ₹2,500–6,000 mid-range; ₹9,000+ luxury (estimates)Most travellers sleep in Agra and visit Fatehpur Sikri for the day, since Agra has far more rooms and food choices. Taj Ganj has the cheapest guesthouses and hostels. The Cantt area suits you if you arrive by train. Book ahead in the October–February peak.
Small guesthouses in Fatehpur Sikri town
₹800–3,000 / night (estimate)A handful of basic lodges and a few heritage-style guesthouses exist in the town itself. They suit anyone who wants to see the complex at opening time without an early start from Agra. Options are limited and quality varies, so read recent reviews and confirm hot water and power backup.
Things to do
Walk the royal complex
Entry ₹50 for Indian citizens; under-15s freeThe palace area holds Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Panch Mahal and the courtyard buildings. Go early, wear shoes you can walk in, and plan at least 2–3 hours. A licensed guide helps explain what each building was for, so use the booking counters rather than touts.
See Buland Darwaza and the Jama Masjid
Free to low cost (confirm locally)The huge gateway leads into the mosque courtyard and the Salim Chishti tomb. Dress modestly, carry a scarf if you wish, and expect to leave shoes at the stand. Some sources say this religious side has no ticket, but confirm on the day.
Pair it with Agra Fort
Because Fatehpur Sikri is open on Fridays when the Taj Mahal is not, many people pair it with Agra Fort on that day. Do Fatehpur Sikri first, in the cool morning, then return to Agra for the fort in the afternoon.
Browse the bazaar
The lanes near the mosque sell marble inlay pieces, trinkets and snacks. Bargain politely, and ignore anyone who insists on becoming your guide before you reach the gate.
Food
Dhabas and snack stalls near the bazaar
₹80–300 per meal (estimate)Around the bus stop and the Jama Masjid lanes you will find simple tea stalls and thali places. Expect UP staples such as puri-sabzi, kachori, samosa and chai. Pick busy places, and carry your own water bottle to refill.
Eat the bigger meals in Agra
₹150–600 per meal (estimate)Agra has the wider choice, from street breakfast like bedai-jalebi to sit-down North Indian restaurants. Plan dinner there after the return trip. Many Agra shops also sell petha, the local sweet, to carry home.
Safety & permits
Permits & entry
Entry ticket
₹35–50 for Indians (as listed by ASI)The ASI page lists ₹50 per head for Indian citizens, with a lower rate of ₹35 for online payment, and free entry for children under 15. Another source says cash is not accepted at the windows, which conflicts with the ASI note about cash. Carry a photo ID and confirm the payment mode on the ASI website. Rules and fees change, so confirm on the official site before you go.
Timings and Friday
Check before you goASI lists the site as open sunrise to sunset, and many guides say 6 am to 6 pm. Sources disagree on Fridays. The ASI page says the site museum is closed on Friday, while some travel sites say the whole complex is closed. Most say the monument itself is open. Confirm timings and closures on the ASI site before travelling, as rules change.
Mosque etiquette
The Jama Masjid and the dargah are living religious places. Cover shoulders and knees, remove footwear, and follow staff instructions about photography, which may be restricted in places. Rules change, so confirm at the gate.
Safety notes
Heat is the main risk from April to June, so carry water and sun protection. Touts offering unofficial guiding or shopping detours are common, so use licensed guides from the ticket counters and agree prices first. Keep bags zipped in crowded lanes, and watch for monkeys around the monuments. Daytime visits are generally comfortable for solo and women travellers, but plan to be back in Agra before dark, as buses thin out in the evening.
Phone network & ATMs
Mobile coverage in town is generally usable, but check before you go. Download offline maps and keep your return bus or train timings handy. UPI works in most shops in Agra, but carry some cash for small stalls and local rides.
